Indian Army Successfully Tests Akash Prime in Ladakh

PostAkash Prime air defence system

The Indian Army conducted a high-altitude trial of the Akash Prime surface-to-air missile system at over 15,000 ft in the Ladakh sector on July 16, 2025. The test was overseen by officials from the Army Air Defence Corps and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the system's developer.

  • The Akash Prime achieved two direct hits on high-speed aerial targets, demonstrating its precision performance in extremely thin atmosphere and cold weather.
  • This variant features an indigenous active radar seeker, optimized for high-altitude operations—making it a significant leap over the original Akash system.
  • Having already proven its mettle during Operation Sindoor, Akash Prime is now being prepared for induction—forming the 3rd and 4th Akash regiments of the Indian Army

Why it matters:
This trial underscores India’s strides in self-reliant defence technology, fortifying air defence infrastructure along its high-altitude borders in Ladakh. The success ensures that the Akash Prime is not only capable of operating in extreme environments, but also bolsters India’s readiness against aerial threats from Pakistan or China by adding another robust layer of defence.
