India and Japan's Defense Relations Reaches New Milestone: IAF Participates in Exercise Shinyuu Maitri.
The Indian Army, while participating in the joint Army exercise with Japan called Dharma Guardian, is also involved in Exercise Shinyuu Maitri with the Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF). This air exercise took place on 1-2 March 2023. The Indian Air Force is represented by a single C-17 Globemaster III aircraft in this year’s exercise, while the JASDF is participating with C-2 transport aircraft.
The air exercise was divided into two phases, with the first phase focusing on discussions about tactical manoeuvres and transport operations. In the second phase, flying drills were conducted with IAF's C-17 and JASDF's C-2 cargo aircraft. The Exercise Shinyuu Maitri with JASDF took place at a time when the IAF's heavy lift transport aircraft fleet is also participating in Exercise Desert Flag VIII in UAE and Exercise Cobra Warrior in the UK.
