100-ft High National Flag Unfurled in J&K
On 9 March 2023, the Indian Army installed a 100-foot-tall national flag in the hilly Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, as a tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. This is the second high-mast flag hoisted by the Army in the Chenab valley region, which was once a hotbed of terrorism, but has been completely cleared over a decade ago.
The General Officer Commanding of the Army's Delta Force, Major General Ajay Kumar, unfurled the flagpole at the Doda sports stadium, in the presence of other dignitaries, including the Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police. The GOC honoured the next of kin of soldiers who had died in the service of the nation, and also felicitated members of the civil society who contributed towards nation-building.
Major General Kumar said that the tallest flag was a tribute to the countless soldiers of the Chenab valley region who had made the ultimate sacrifice while safeguarding the unity and integrity of the nation. He further added that the 100-foot-high national flag, the first of its kind in Doda, would not only make every citizen feel proud of the country but also add to the attraction of the location. The flag can be seen from a long distance and will go a long way in inculcating the sense of belonging for the country among the residents of Doda, especially the younger generation.
The event was witnessed by locals, including students and war widows, who expressed gratitude to the Army for their contributions towards the nation's safety. Chinta Devi, the wife of Naib Subedar Chunni Lal, who was awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously, Vir Chakra, and Sena Medal for his sacrifice in the service of the nation, expressed her appreciation for the Army for making them feel proud of the achievements of her martyred husband. Students and performers who were part of the event also expressed their gratitude and pride in being part of the historic occasion.
