J&K Government Bans 25 Books, Works by Arundhati Roy & A.G. Noorani Among Them

In a significant move, the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department has banned 25 books citing content that allegedly poses a threat to national security and public order. Among the banned titles are works by prominent authors Arundhati Roy and A.G. Noorani, both known for their critical takes on the Kashmir issue and the Indian state.
The ban was issued under Section 95 of the CrPC, which allows governments to prohibit the distribution of publications deemed seditious or inflammatory. Officials stated that the books contain material that could “disturb peace and incite violence,” though specific excerpts have not been made public.
The decision has sparked concerns among civil liberties advocates, who see it as part of a broader clampdown on dissent and intellectual freedom in the region.
This development comes amidst a continuing debate over freedom of expression in India, particularly in politically sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir.
