Is LASIK allowed in the Indian Army?
In short, yes. But there are a few things to keep in mind.
LASIK is a surgery that uses lasers to fix vision or eye problems. Another similar surgery is called PRK. Both surgeries help improve vision by changing how light enters the eye.
People who face vision difficulties can consider LASIK or PRK surgery to improve their eyesight.
Those whose vision improves post-surgery are eligible to join the Indian Army, including its engineering and medical branches. However, meeting the Army's physical fitness standards is a crucial requirement.
Eligibility Criteria After LASIK/PRK Surgery: If you are over 20 years old, you can seek commission in the Indian Army. However, there are specific conditions you need to fulfil for the Indian Army:
- The surgery must have been successful.
- The eyesight should remain stable for at least six months following the surgery.
- A healthy retina is essential.
- Corrected vision should be 6/6 in better eye and 6/9 in worse eye, with maximum residual refraction of + 1.50 in any meridian for myopia or hypermetropia.
LASIK/PRK Surgeries at Armed Force Medical College: People above 20 years of age can undergo LASIK or PRK surgeries at the Armed Force Medical College in Pune. However, it's important to note that if you get these surgeries, you would NOT be eligible to join certain areas like the National Defence Academy, Navy, Air Force, or positions like Junior Commissioned Officers.
Aircrew Eligibility: Individuals who have undergone LASIK or PRK surgery while being a part of the Indian Army are NOT eligible to become aircrew members.
In short, LASIK and PRK surgeries are allowed under certain conditions in the Indian Army. These rules include having a successful surgery, keeping their eyesight steady, and meeting specific vision requirements.
