2021 – Desert Knight-21 conducted between the IAF and the French Air Force.

The Indian Air Force and the French Air and Space Force engaged in a first-of-its-kind bilateral exercise called Ex Desert Knight 2021, held at Air Force Station Jodhpur from 20-24 January 2021.

The exercise involved a range of aircraft, including the Rafale, Su-30 MKI, and Mirage 2000 from the IAF, and combat enablers like AWACS and AEW&C aircraft. The FASF brought their A400M and A330 based MRTT aircraft.

During the exercise, both air forces worked together in a realistic setting to enhance their operational capabilities and interoperability. They engaged in complex missions, including Large Force Engagements, providing a valuable opportunity to share best practices and evolve operational concepts.

The exercise was also an opportunity for the Indian Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat PVSM UYSM AVSM YSM SM VSM ADC, and the French contingent leader, Maj Gen Laurent Lherbette, to interact and share insights. General Rawat even had the chance to fly on-board the MRTT, where he witnessed air-to-air refueling operations conducted by the IAF and FASF fighters.

The exercise was visited by Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria PVSM AVSM VM ADC, along with the French Ambassador to India, H.E. Mr Emmanuel Lenain. The visitors were impressed with the complexity of the operations conducted and the interoperability achieved by the participants within a short span of just four days. The Chief of Air Staff also commended the planning, operational, and maintenance staff from both sides for ensuring the exercise was conducted smoothly and safely.

Overall, Ex Desert Knight 2021 was an exciting and impressive display of two powerful air forces working together to enhance their capabilities and achieve greater interoperability. It was truly a sight to behold, and a testament to the skill and dedication of the participants.
