221 Squadron (Valiants)

No. 221 Squadron of the Indian Air Force, known as the "Valiants," is a fighter squadron equipped with Su-30MKI aircraft and based at Halwara Air Force Station. Established on 14 February 1963 at Barrackpore, the squadron has a rich history of operating various aircraft, including Supermarine Spitfire, de Havilland Vampire, Su-7, and MiG-23 BN. The squadron has been involved in significant military operations such as the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 over Bangladesh and the Kargil War.

Over the years, No. 221 Squadron has seen several changes in its base and aircraft composition. Notably, the squadron transitioned to Su-30MKI aircraft in April 2017. Wing Commander HS Luthra was inducted as the commanding officer during this transition. The squadron's pilots have been recognized with gallantry awards for their exceptional service and valour.

Notably, President Droupadi Murmu honoured the No. 221 Squadron with the prestigious President's Standard on 8 March 2024. This recognition is the highest honour bestowed upon a military unit and highlights the squadron's exceptional service to the nation. With a legacy of operational excellence and a commitment to national security, No. 221 Squadron continues to play a vital role within the Indian Air Force, upholding its motto of "Valiants" and contributing to the defence capabilities of the country.
